Reprint from Cycling News, May 15
The 28th edition of the TD Bank Philadelphia International Championship, taking place June 3, 2012 in Philadelphia, Pennyslvania, will feature some changes which Pro Cycling Tour CEO David Chauner is confident will be an improvement for both the professional cyclists as well as the cycling public.

For the first time in the esteemed history of the men's professional race, extending back to 1985 when Eric Heiden won the inaugural event, the distance will be reduced from 156 miles to 124 miles. The route for the UCI 1-ranked men's race will remain the same, but for 2012 there's a change in the amount of main laps and finishing circuits.

As in previous editions, the men's race opens with parade laps on the Benjamin Franklin Parkway around Logan Circle, near the Philadelphia Museum of Art, before tackling the 14.5-mile main circuit that heads north on Kelly Drive along the Schuylkill River toward the Manayunk district.

In Manayunk awaits the race's signature feature, a steep, 800-metre hill known as "The Wall", followed by a descent back onto Kelly Drive for a return trip along the Schuylkill, with detours for the climbs of Strawberry Mansion and Lemon Hill, before rounding back onto the Benjamin Franklin Parkway.
The men's race concludes with short, three-mile laps around Lemon Hill and Logan Circle.
The first change to the race format is the reduction in the number of main circuits, from 10 to seven, while the number of finishing circuits has been increased from three to five resulting in a new race distance of 124 miles.

The format to the UCI 1.1-ranked women's Liberty Classic which starts 10 minutes after the men's race and runs concurrently on the same course, will remain unchanged from previous editions with the riders completing four laps of the main circuit for a distance of 58 miles.

New for 2012 is the creation of a GRAN FONDO event or THE BICYCLING OPEN for amateur riders and the general public, consisting of three laps of the main circuit, which takes place Sunday morning prior to the start of the professional races.

"We are very excited about the partnership with Bicycling Magazine to create the first Bicycling Open which lets amateur and recreations cyclists take to the course while it's closed, prior to the pros, for three laps, which we've never been able to do before," Chauner told Cyclingnews.
"In order to enable us to do that as well as keep within the time frame we have for the streets, we opted to shorten the pro race by three big loops, so there's seven instead of ten, and we're adding finishing circuits between Lemon Hill and the Parkway. This drops the distance from 156 miles to approximately 124 miles.

"In addition to the reasoning to allow the amateurs on there and still keep the same time frame, we really believe this is going to make the race more exciting, particularly by adding more closing circuits, but also the lesser distance is, we think, going to make for a more competitive race and more even match. From what I've heard from the team directors most of them feel the same way. It sounds like it will be a good improvement."

The gran fondo ride begins at 7:00am on Sunday, followed by the men's race at 10:45 am and the women's race at 10:55 am.
The 2011 edition of the TD Bank Philadelphia International Championship was won by Denmark's Alex Rasmussen while Giorgia Bronzini sprinted to the victory in the women's Liberty Classic.

Bicycling Magazine Open--Citizens Gran Fondo Press Conference

Mananyuk, PA--Charities Turn out for Bicycling Magazine Open
Program Offers all Cyclists a Chance to Ride the Pro Course

Winnie’s LeBus in Manayunk was the site for announcing the Bicycling Magazine Open, a three lap timed event for amateurs and recreational cyclists to ride the closed Championship course before the pros in the 28th TD Bank Philadelphia International Championship on Sunday, June 3.

Sponsored by Bicycling Magazine, the largest general interest cycling publication in the world, the Bicycling Open expects several thousand entrants to take the challenge. In order to accommodate the Bicycling Open from 7AM to 10:30, the traditional TD Bank international pro race will start at 10:45 and be shortened from 156 miles to 124. The pros will ride 7 times up the Manayunk Wall instead of ten and will do five finishing circuits between Lemon Hill and the Parkway instead of the traditional three.

Dave Howard, Bicycling’s executive editor and long time fan of the classic Philadelphia event said, “We are excited to offer the thrill of riding up the Wall to our readership of dedicated recreational riders and then encourage them to stay to watch the pros show how it’s done.”

Michael Chauner, a pro cyclist who will ride for ProAir-HFA in the TD Bank Championship was on hand to offer coaching from his company, VeloSouplesse, to first-timers willing to take the challenge. First to volunteer was Winnie Clowry, owner of Winnie’s LeBus on Main street in Manayunk. “I’m a little nervous,”, she said “But I’ve watched and supported the race for so many years that I couldn’t pass up a chance to actually try the course!” Chauner will give her a training program based upon her goals and time commitment to train.

Importantly, the Bicycling Open will offer participants to ride for their favorite cause.  The event’s connection with Charity of Choice encourages registrants to challenge friends and family to sponsor their rides, with funds raised going to the riders’ own favorite charities.   Many area non-profits are rallying their supporters to ride in the Bicycling Open, maximizing a turn-key fundraiser for their individual organizations. Participating Charities that attended the announcement were: ALS of Greater Philadelphia, Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Phila, Cadence Cycling Foundation, Cradles to Crayons, Gearing Up, MS Society, Neighborhood Bike Works, Phila 9/11, Philabundance, Ronald McDonald House of Phila, Shriner's Hospital Philadelphia.  Additional charities will be signing on.

Bicycling Magazine Open--Citizens Gran Fondo

Get On a Bike & Feel Like a Pro in First Bicycling Magazine Open
New Ride-for-Fun Event Can Also Be Fundraiser for Your Favorite Charity

PHILADELPHIA (Feb. 14, 2012) – For 28 years, the first Sunday in June has seen cycling’s elite international athletes descend on Philadelphia for a punishing day on one of the sport’s most epic race courses. This year, the TD Bank Philadelphia International Cycling Championship will again promise speed and grueling climbs for the pros, but it will be a brand new day for everyone from cycling amateurs to casual riders who simply want to experience the fanfare of riding that same iconic route.

Pro Cycling Tour, organizers of the TD Bank bike race, has teamed up with Bicycling Magazine and Charity of Choice to create a Gran Fondo ride that anyone can try for fun before the professional men’s race gets started on Sunday, June 3.  Named the Bicycling Magazine Open, this Gran Fondo or “Big Ride” allows every rider to feel like a pro as they pedal all or parts of the 14.75 mile circuit for up to three laps.  Not only will riders experience the rush of being on a closed, professionally timed race course, they can also choose to turn their rides into fundraisers for their favorite charities through the event’s collaboration with Charity of Choice.

“Cycling’s top men and women have challenged this route over the years – from Heiden, Armstrong and Hincapie in the early days to today’s stars like Alex Rasmussen, Peter Sagan and Ina Teutenberg.  It’s a special experience, and if you can ride a bike, you can do it, too,” said David Chauner, president of Pro Cycling Tour.  “It’s a great way for families and friends to try something different together and to become a real part of the pageantry and festival atmosphere that the Philly race is known for around the world.”

Ride for Fun
Registrants for the Bicycling Open will take to the course from 7 to 10 a.m., before the pros roll to the start line.  All entrants will receive a timing chip that will record a time for each complete lap as well as for each time up the half-mile Manayunk Wall.  In addition, riders will receive a commemorative T-shirt, swag bag, discount on race VIP tickets and pre- and post-ride refreshments. There will also be premium prizes for top finishers.

The route begins on the magnificent Benjamin Franklin Parkway, heads out scenic Kelly Drive to the hillside neighborhood of Manayunk, with the infamous Manayunk Wall, winds through Fairmount Park, descends Lemon Hill and rushes back past the Philadelphia Museum of Art to the finish line on the Parkway.  “There is no other time of the year to experience this ride,” said Chauner. “The Bicycling Open will happen on a closed course, which means safe riding on closed streets with thousands of spectators lining up curbside to cheer on the racers,” he added.

In addition to the personal challenge, participants in the Bicycling Open can also ride for a cause.  The event’s connection with Charity of Choice encourages registrants to challenge friends and family to sponsor their rides, with funds raised going to the riders’ own favorite charities.   That means if groups of people band together and ride for a specific charity, a sizable donation can be generated just by having fun riding bikes.

Charity of Choice offers valuable prizes for all fund raisers and each participating charity that reaches the benchmark just 10 participants will receive exhibit space at the event’s Cycling, Health and Fitness Expo.  According to Hunter Zeising, Executive Director of Charity of Choice, “We have discovered that there is no better way for non-profits to raise money through an athletic event than the Charity of Choice program. By partnering with an approved, existing event like the Bicycling Open, the charity does not have to create and staff its own event, and the entire fundraising process is turn-key.”
